What a great place for information on the Acadien people and area. Highly recommend if you like learning about the area and how it came to be. The people and background. Amazing journey into the past. And if you happen to be lucky enough to visit when Mr. Perrin is there, you will be taken through on a personal tour. Just great.

I support your work because I spent most of my life in Lafayette, and watched the reemergence of the Cajun culture, led by a family friend, Jimmy Domengeaux. Although my heritage is Ashkenazi Jewish , I always enjoyed the culture, food, and joi de vivre’ of my neighbors. Keeping all histories alive is very important to me, making sure that those histories are accurately told!

We arrived during open hours to find the museum closed — so we called the number on the door, and someone came within minutes to help us enter. It was totally worth it! Bill and Anna, the local volunteers, were warm and full of stories. The building is small but jam packed with stuff that tells the story of the Acadian/Cajun experience from 300 years ago in Canada to today’s Erath area and beyond. So many cool items, stories, and genuine warmth & love.

Thank you and your guests so much for a wonderful experience… Each and every one of your guests brought a wealth of information and insights into the history and culture of the Cajuns. Everyone came away saying this was the best experience of the trip. The warmth and hospitality we were shown made this a memorable experience. Again, thank you to everyone. We so much enjoyed. Hoping we see you next year.

Jeff and I are delighted to support your work because the continuation of the Acadian Museum of Erath is SO important! The rich history of the Acadian people and their culture cannot be forgotten! We learned so much! We were excited to hear about the possible expansion of this museum during our visit last October and can’t wait to return to see it and you!”

Thank you so much for taking time to show me around your wonderful museum and share your knowledge. All the artifacts were fascinating, but your passion and dedication to passing on your knowledge and the heritage of Cajun culture were what made all the difference. You helped bring the exhibits alive with your personal stories and historical information. I’m so glad I let the Holy Spirit guide me to Erath and your little museum. It was a very inspiring and insightful trip-just what I needed.

I just want to say a big thank you to Mr. Perrin for his letter to the National Post in response to a commentary on Joseph Broussard.
As a Canadian, I am embarrassed to say I only have a limited knowledge of the suffering inflicted on the Acadian people and this dark chapter of our history. Even so, I was appalled at what was written in the National Post and was happy to see an intelligent response.
This past summer my wife and I traveled to Bouctouche New Brunswick where my wife’s Acadian grandmother lived. We had a great time speaking with some proud Acadians, visiting museums and learning some about the history.
I will definitely be seeking out Mr. Perrin’s books and if we ever find ourselves in Louisiana we’ll be stopping in at your museum.

I just want to say — how much I love the book, Healing Traditions of South Louisiana. My mom went to …oh I can’t remember the event…in Lafayette a few months ago and met you and purchased a copy of the book for me and herself. I pick it up often and love not only the knowledge and lost wisdom it contains but also your style of writing! Feels more like a conversation than a textbook doling out information.
A very good friend of mine is part Native American from Gueydan and has always spoken of “traiteurs” and extolled their deep healing powers and lamented the fact that so few of them still remain, much to our detriment. I know she will treasure your book, and I look forward to passing it on to others as well.
My parents and I have also read Acadie: Then and Now and I learned so much, and have recommended it to others for years. Thank you for all you do. In gratitude,

Cultures that don’t find their place in archives will eventually disappear. A search on the Internet revealed that Cajun archives shine through their almost total non-existence. However, every society possesses an archival process. Cajuns are no exception.
Given the oral nature of the culture and the sparsity of the Cajun writings, Cajun archives have taken a different form. These are found in local museums such as the Acadian Museum of Erath, which fills a historical gap by carefully collecting and curating Cajun traces and by- products that reveal their culture. It would be sad for History not to preserve America’s happiest way of life!

Dear Friends, Last night’s presentations brought this wonderful program to a close. Speakers Mary and Warren Perrin gave informative, engaging and entertaining looks into the worlds of folk medicine and history. I thank them for making the trip and I’m glad they sold so many books, including their book written entirely in French.

I thank you a lot for the visit to the Acadian Museum. I appreciated the time we spent together while you explained the story of the Cajuns. I saw in you a great defender of your people, your French langage, your culture, your identity and that impressed me very much It was a honor and a pleasure to meet a man like you. Lache pas bougre !

Dear Warren, I hope you are well. I’m reaching out to let you know my dissertation, Lâche pas la patate: Language and Identity in Cajun French Poetry (Zachary Richard and Jean Arceneaux), has been given a first-class distinction. This would not have been possible without all the help and knowledge I received in Louisiana this past winter. I’m now known as the “Cajun French” student in the French Department at the University of St. Andrews and I couldn’t be prouder of the epithet! None of my classmates knew that Queen Elizabeth had been sued over the treatment of the Acadians (which made for a great piece of pub trivia).
In other news, I’m deeply saddened to hear that funding for La Veillée is under threat for this year. I’ve so enjoyed watching their documentaries and hearing Louisiana French spoken. I have such pride in my heritage and it is my hope that the next generation can also be allowed that same pride for Louisiana French. If there is anything I can do to help fight to save the program, I would love to participate. Finally, I’m pleased to say I’ve been selected to volunteer as a tour guide at Notre Dame in Paris during the Olympics this summer. I’ll try to bring a Cajun flag with me and get a photo!
Merci encore pour toute ton aide. J’espère que je rentrerai en Louisiane un jour bientôt!

I dropped by the Acadian Museum for the first time last Friday. What amazing memories were stirred up in my heart and soul from the 60 minutes I spent in that sacred space. Thank you for your commitment to our culture and heritage. Be well my friend.

Amazing museum jam packed with items from the past giving a history of the people’s who were kicked out of their homeland and the resiliency of the Acadians.
This museum is literally packed floor to ceiling with the history of the area and how it came to be occupied by the Acadians and their way of life. With the way the world is changing, history seems to be left behind and this is a remarkable way of maintaining it. They could literally stand to spread out to the rest of this short strip mall and probably still be filled to the gills. The lady working when I visited was friendly and informative and could probably talk for hours. I recommend this to anyone interested in the history of the area and people’s.
I have tried one other time to visit, but it was closed for the day. Please remember these are volunteers who are dedicated to maintaining the history of the Acadians in southwest Louisiana. The door at the corner of the building at Edwards and Broadway looks like the entrance, but it is not. The entrance is a bit further down on Broadway. They are open Tuesday thru Friday 1p to 4p, Saturday 10a to noon.

Warren, our group enjoyed our visit to the museum very much. We were disappointed that we didn’t have more time. We discussed making another trip. The information we gathered today will be so beneficial in planning for our museum in Youngsville. Thank you for your time and sharing your knowledge with us. Your offer to lend us items is so very generous and very much appreciated!

The visit to the Acadian Museum was terrific, and Jackie Vincent provided a wealth of helpful information and was a wonderful guide. The purpose of my visit to the Acadian Museum in Erath was to learn about the Deportation of Acadians from Nova Scotia and the legacy of those who made a new home in Louisiana. Their story was presented there-from the Great Upheaval to the modern day vindication of human rights in the Royal Proclamation-in an interesting, highly informative and enjoyable way. But the museum offers so much more on Acadian culture and the history of Erath. All of which makes it a great place to spend an afternoon.

Hello! I visited your museum with my cousin Jackie Hebert and I know I said it many times before while we were talking but it is just amazing the work you’ve done for the Acadians as a whole. I remember growing up and around 2010 my dad started to say things like “We are Acadians” or even mentioning our Native American heritage which goes into that as well. I never made the connection until just this year when I started to research more and my dad found your books that Acadians and Native Americans were connected that way. It is just a wealth of knowledge you have shared with my family through your books and it is truly amazing to know so much about my culture now.

The Acadian weaving tradition collection is just one of many, many impressive collections housed in the Erath Museum. Warren Perrin has always been so very helpful and cooperative in assisting me and my apprentice in my research. As descendants of Southwest Louisiana, we are very fortunate to have the Erath Museum and to know that this museum works at giving visitors a better understanding of the Acadians and our Cajun history, culture and traditions. Louisiana needs to support the Erath Museum! (Read the whole letter.)

It was such a pleasure to be able to visit your Acadian museum recently. I appreciate you allowing me to tour without an appointment. I had heard of the museum and was on my way to New Iberia when I thought of stopping. I have been to the Acadian museum in St. Martinville and New Iberia and I found your museum much more interesting. It has a “down to earth” and authentic feel. I could relate to so much of the information from my own life or from what I have learned from relatives in that area. In the future I look forward to returning and spending much more time. There is a wealth of information and nostalgia to be enjoyed.

The Acadian Museum stands as one of several venues in South Louisiana which continues to successfully highlight our unique Cajun culture. This place not only gives us much information from an archival perspective, but is also one of the many places where our culture is “experienced”, not only in its facility, but in its community, where the elements of the culture exist.

The Acadian Museum in Erath, Louisiana serves as the focal point of cultural activities in Vermilion Parish. It not only has a strong and diverse collection of historical artifacts on the history and culture of Vermilion Parish, but also promotes Acadian heritage through varied activities such as the Living Legends program recognizing leaders in the Acadian movement. Another facet of the outstanding collection held by the Acadian Museum is its Cajun music recordings and Acadian heritage interviews with local people discussing the Acadian cultural traditions and heritage of Vermilion Parish. Researchers from throughout the United States and the world come to the Acadian Museum to study its unique collections.

The visit we had last week to the museum was a pleasure; Diana Soirez was a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide and we appreciate her dedication to making the visit possible. The Acadian history displays — and your copy of the Queen’s Proclamation — were outstanding. We’ve been waiting to see the painting of Beausoleil Broussard and it didn’t disappoint. Our afternoon in Erath is one of our most memorable.
