Seeking an Acadian Nation The 1930 Diary of an Evangeline Girl

By Warren A. Perrin and Mary B. Perrin

Seeking an Acadian Nation tells the real-life story, in words and vintage photographs, of the epic 1930 journey led by Sen. Dudley J. LeBlanc, which he called the “First Official Pilgrimage of Louisiana Acadians to Grand-Pré, Nova Scotia.” The trip, which celebrated the 175th anniversary of the Acadian Deportation, marked the first time Cajuns returned to their ancestral homeland and began the process of a Grand Reunification between the Acadian families of Canada and their cousins in the United States. The book, which traces the evolution of this reunification up to the present time, contains over 200 pages of historic photos and text in a large format that will make an ideal holiday gift, coffee table book, or conversation starter.

The Bernards of Louisiana: An Acadian Family History

This is the story of Beaubassin, the Acadian resistance, and the 1765 Beausoleil expedition which established a “New Acadia” in Louisiana, as experienced through the eyes of two young men named Michel and Pierre Bernard. The book follows Acadian history from the early 1600s until present-day in Canada and Louisiana.

Though it focuses on the Bernards,  it could just as easily be a history of other families who came to Louisiana the same way, with names like Broussard, LeBlanc, Landry, Theriot, Boudreaux, Hebert, Cormier, Breaux, Doucet, and many others. These people knew each other as friends and neighbors, escaped the deportations together, and sailed to Louisiana under the leadership of Joseph “Beausoleil” Broussard where they planted the seeds of a New Acadia in 1765.

“This work is a tight, tidy piece of our history, wonderfully readable, to be savored not only by your relations for generations to come, but also by all lovers of the thing called ‘Acadian.'”
—Steven A. Cormier, historian and author of acadiansingray.com
